This year, we started doing something new in the produce department. I don’t pick the fruit anymore. Unless I need something in particular for a recipe, I have handed over the fruit shopping to the kids. I try keep the experience as rule-free as I can and they can pick almost anything they want, with two words of advice:
1. Choose fruit that is in season
2. Choose fruit that is lower in price as much as possible (which is pretty easy to do with fruit in season)
It’s proving to be a great learning experience for them. The kids didn’t pay attention to cherries until they were overflowing in the produce department. This prompted lots of conversations about why they are seeing so many in the stores and about fruits are in season. The only downfall is that they want cherries on every shopping trips because they know they will soon be gone.
With this change in our shopping, our kids have eaten more fresh fruit this summer than any other year. Something in particular that the kids are loving is grilled fruit. We’ve grilled pineapple in the past, but now we started grilling lots of different fruits, plus grilling them in different ways.
The biggest hit of the summer? Without a doubt, it’s been my Grilled Peaches and Cherries with Cinnamon-Honey Syrup. We use it as an ice cream topping and even when I make a large batch, and it’s ALWAYS gone in one day. That’s a seal of approval in our house!

While you won’t need a full pound for this recipe, you might as well get a pound because it’s hard to resist snacking on them. To get your cherries ready for grilling, you’ll just need to cut them in half and remove their pit and stems.
I also bought the peaches for this recipe in the Walmart Produce department for .99 cents per pound. While your prices may vary a bit, but I do find them to be one of the lowest in town. The peaches are cut into large chunks and the pit is discarded.
On wooden skewers that have been soaked in water, the fruit is threaded onto the skewers. I recommend putting your cherries and peaches on separate skewers as this will help the fruit on each skewer to come in contact with the grill surface.
The fruit is grilled on medium heat for about 10-15 minutes or unless tender and showing grill marks. They are removed from the grill and the fruit is placed in a bowl and the skewers are discarded.
While the fruit is cooling a bit, it’s time to make our cinnamon-honey syrup. It’s such a great addition to the grilled fruit and so delicious drizzled on top of vanilla ice cream. To make this, you’l just melt together butter, honey, and cinnamon into a small saucepan.
Drizzle the cinnamon-honey syrup over the top of your grilled peaches and cherries and very gently turn the fruit over in the bowl to ensure that all the fruit is coated. If fruit is still hot or very warm, allow it to continue to cool.
Spoon the warm fruit over a scoop of vanilla ice cream. You should have extra cinnamon-honey sauce collecting in the bottom of your bowl, so don’t be shy about drizzling a bit extra over your ice cream. Take a bite and I bet you’ll agree that there is only two words to describe this: insanely delicious.

- 14 ounces cherries
- 3 large peaches
- 1/4 cup honey
- 1 1/2 tablespoons butter (unsalted)
- 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- Vanilla Ice Cream (optional)
- Cut cherries in half and remove their pit and stems. Cut the peaches into large chunks and discard the pit.
- Heat grill to medium heat. Thread fruit onto the skewers. Grill fruit on medium heat for about 10-15 minutes or until tender and showing grill marks. Remove the fruit skewers from the grill. When cooled enough to handle, but still warm, transfer fruit to a large bowl from the skewers.
- In a small saucepan, just melt together butter, honey, and cinnamon over low heat. When butter is melted and ingredients are combined, remove from heat. Drizzle over fruit in the bowl and gently turn the fruit over in the bowl to ensure that all the fruit is coated with the syrup. If fruit is still hot or very warm, allow it to continue to cool.
- Spoon the warm fruit over a scoop of vanilla ice cream, if desired. Spoon extra cinnamon-honey over the ice cream.
